아무튼 비주얼 스튜디오에서 코드 읽을 때 기본적으로 딱 두 가지 단축키만 알고 있으면 편하게 소스의 숲을 헤집고 다닐 수가 있다. 한 절반은 먹고 들어간달까.

각각은 여기서는 명령어라는 용어를 사용했지만 정확하게는 directive(지시자) 라고 하는 것이 나을 지 모르겠다.

가장 흔히 볼 수 있는 전처리기이다. 해당 파일을 찾아서 컴파일러가 그 파일이 마치 현재 컴파일하는

소스 코드에 포함되어 있는 것같이 해준다. <> 는 표준 헤더 파일일 경우에 설정되어 있는 폴더에서

헤더 파일을 찾으며 “” 는 그 외 폴더에서 찾을 수 있는데 최우선으로 현재 프로젝트 폴더에서 찾게 된다.

define 문은 여러 경우에 사용될 수 있는데 일반적으로 문자열 대치에 사용된다.

 

#define MAX 512

 

라고 하면 소스 코드에 있는 MAX 라는 문자를 모두 512 로 대치한다.

는 실제 컴파일러가 컴파일할 때는

 

int Arr[512];

 

로 대치될 것이다. 이것은

 

#define MAX 512

int Arr[MAX];

로 바뀐다고 생각하면 된다.

대치되는 문자 없이 그냥

 

#define MAX

 

로 사용되는 경우도 흔하다. 이것은 MAX 라는 문자열을 정의하지만 대치시키지는 않는다.

이렇게 사용하는 경우는 #ifdef ~ #elif ~ #else ~ #endif 문과 같이 사용되면 상당히 유용하게 사용된다.

포함감시(Inclusion Guard)

 

여러 개의 헤더 파일(.h 또는 .hpp)과 구현 파일(.c 또는 .cpp) 들이 있을 경우 헤더 파일이 중복 포함되는

경우가 많다. 특히 C/C++에 입문한 지 얼마 안되는 사람들에게서 자주 나타나는 데 이런 경우 포함감시를

사용한다. 사실 포함감시 기능은 만드는 모든 헤더파일에 적용하도록 하자.

매크로 함수(Macro function)

 

매크로 함수도 전처리기로 흔히 사용된다. 다만 디버깅이 힘들다는 단점 때문에 점점 사용되지 않고 있기도 하다.

특히, C++의 경우 엄격한 형 검사를 하게 되는데 매크로 함수를 사용하게 되면 그 기능을 사용할 수 없으니

피해야 한다.

로 대치될 것이다. 매크로 함수를 사용한다면 ()를 남발하는 습관을 키워야 한다.

와 같은 경우에 직접 대치해 보면 알게 될 것이다.

 

C++ 사용자는 매크로 함수보다는 template이나 inline 함수를 사용해야 한다.

 

문자열 조작

 

#define SAY(x) printf(#x)

 

SAY(Hello, world!);

 

와 같이 식별자 앞에 # 를 붙이게 되면 자동으로 “x” 와 같이 “”로 둘러 싸 준다.

결과적으로

로 대치될 것이다.

 

문자열 결합

 

## 는 두 개의 문자열을 결합해 준다.

와 같이 된 경우

 

Print(One) 을 사용하면 PrintOne 이라는 문자열로 대치되고 Print(Two) PrintTwo 라는 문자열로 대치된다.

잘 사용하면 아주 유용한 기능이 된다.

대부분의 컴파일러는 ASSERT() 매크로를 가지고 있다. 여기서는 직접 하나 만들어 보자.

여러 줄이 필요할 때는 \ 가 사용되었다는 것에 유의하자. 또한 내장 매크로인 __LINE__ 이나 __FILE__

내장 매크로

 

컴파일 시에 컴파일러가 미리 정의하고 있는 매크로들이 있다.

각각 오른 쪽에 있는 내용으로 대치된다.

 

__DATE__ : 컴파일하는 날짜

__TIME__ : 컴파일하는 시간

__LINE__ : 현재 컴파일하고 있는 줄 번호

__FILE__ : 현재 컴파일하고 있는 파일의 이름

같은 경우 위의 포함감시 기능을 컴파일러가 알아서 해 준다.

National Reading Vocabulary

Introduction

 

The following vocabulary list contains the new reading words students should master by the end of Grade 5.  Students who achieve this goal (and who have mastered their previous vocabulary lists for Grades 1-4) will be reading somewhat above 6.0 grade level and typically score in the top 10% on 5th Grade national reading tests (such as the CTBS and Stanford Achievement Test).

 

A total of 700 new words are introduced in the Grade 5 Vocabulary List (20 words per week for 35 weeks).  The first week reviews a cross sample of 50 Grade 4 words that represent the main phonics and reading rule categories.  Each subsequent week introduces 20 new vocabulary words.

 

Word of the Day – “WD”

 

In nearly each of the weekly lists of 20 words, you will encounter one word next to the letters “WD.”   This stands for “Word of the Day” and is listed in this manner because it is a deviation from the daily phonics or reading rule category and typically requires extra attention for memorization.  For example, in the Week 5 Lesson, the WD word is “source.”   Since the “ou” in source does not make its typical sound (as in loud), it is listed here as the Word of the Day.

 

Grade 5 Vocabulary – Significantly Increased Difficulty

 

While our reading vocabulary lists for Grades 3 and 4 introduce a greater number of words per week than the Grade 5 list (28 vs. 20), it is important to decrease the number of weekly words introduced in the Grade 5 list.  This is done since the words are considerably more complex and used far less often in normal everyday conversation.  Because of this decreased frequency in conversation – books – etc., the words are not as “familiar” to students, and therefore, require considerably more mental energy for learning since word definitions now must also be memorized along with just basic word reading.  By lowering the number of words introduced each week from 28 to 20, we are able to keep the amount of new information introduced within the learning ability of an average 5th grade student, while also insuring students maintain excellent vocabulary progress for remaining at (or above) Grade level throughout the year.


Selection of Grade 5 Vocabulary Words

 

The Grade 5 vocabulary list words were selected from the Houghton Mifflin 5th Grade Literature book (which covers a wide sample of literature topics) along with the most frequently used vocabulary from Houghton Mifflin’s 5th Grade Social Studies program.  Additional key vocabulary used in national standardized reading tests
(i.e. the Stanford Achievement Test) have also been added to the Grade 5 list.

 

Selection of the Grade 5 vocabulary was completed by using a specially developed Word Frequency Computer Program which ranks words in order from “most-common” to “least-common” – as they appeared in the Grade 5 textbooks.  We then used our special “delete” program that automatically removes all reading words that appeared in our Grades 1-4 vocabulary lists, thereby eliminating unplanned duplication.   This results in a highly effective list of new vocabulary words that occur with greatest frequency in Grade 5 textbooks and tests.

 

After identifying these priority words for Grade 5, we then organized words according to common vowel sound and reading-rule categories.  This strategy has proven itself as a vastly superior technique for achieving faster long-term “permanent” memorization of reading vocabulary content.

 

Are My Students Ready for Grade 5 Vocabulary?

 

If you are a 5th Grade teacher in an average socioeconomic setting, then proceeding with this list is a logical strategy.   Even if not all students are reading at a 5.0 Reading Level, you can use our Grade 4 (or Grade 3) Student Reading Wall strategies for quickly improving reading ability in order to bring them up to a 5.0 level.  As a quick assessment, you can test students on the Grade 4 Review words listed for Week 1 in the Grade 5 list.  For example, if a student misses 25 of these 50 words, then he/she most likely will be unable to read 50% of all the approximately 800 Grade 4 words.   If the entire class had this difficulty then consideration should be given into reviewing the Grade 4 vocabulary materials as well.  Keep in mind that it is actually more important for students to have mastered the Grade 4 vocabulary because of their greater frequency of use in textbooks and tests.

 

Determining Student Readiness

 

The first week in the Grade 5 Vocabulary List is composed of a cross-section of our Grade 4 vocabulary organized along different phonics and reading rule categories.  This not only provides students with an excellent review and re-introduction of essential sounds and rules, but can also be used as an excellent testing tool to determine if students need to go back and study the Grade 4 vocabulary.   If a student makes more than 10 errors after reading all 50 words in the first week list, then review or testing of all Grade 4 vocabulary is definitely warranted.  If the student makes less than 5 errors then we can assume that the student most-likely knows approximately 90% of all the Grade 4 words.   However, mastery of even 90% of the Grade 4 vocabulary means there are still about 80 words from the Grade 4 list that the child doesn’t know.


The Role of the Classroom Teacher

 

The most important job of the classroom teacher is to insure students master the reading vocabulary essential for their grade level.  By accomplishing this, you basically eliminate the risk of students falling behind in subsequent years and greatly increase their chances for future academic success in not only Reading, but also Social Studies – Geography – Science – and even the proper reading of math word problems.   Unfortunately, because many school districts have yet to realize the benefits of teaching specific minimum grade level vocabulary, we are seeing far too many students passed on to higher grades who do not achieve at least a minimum of grade level vocabulary progress, and therefore, fall further behind with each passing school year.

 

 

The ReadingKey Vocabulary program is the first program developed that includes a special tool (called the Student Reading Wall Program) specifically designed to catch these “falling-behind” students and quickly bring them up to a proper reading level.  The only way any reading program can accomplish this is if its techniques are highly efficient, thereby resulting in rapid reading progress in a very short period of time.  This is exactly what our Student Reading Wall techniques accomplish.

 

 

Before beginning the 5th Grade list, It is important that students have mastered vocabulary from all previous grade levels.  This is because earlier grade level vocabulary occurs in textbooks and standardized tests far more often than vocabulary in higher lists.  For example, the likelihood of encountering the words - “who” or “how” - are certainly far higher than encountering a 5th Grade word such as “disregard.”   Even in our ReadingKey Grade 5 list, the words are introduced in a “most-common” to “least-common” sequence for greatest efficiency.  For example, the word “regions” occurs 61 times in the Houghton Mifflin 5th Grade Social Studies Program while the word “unique” occurs 2 times.  Therefore, the word “regions” is introduced much earlier (in week 2) than the word “unique” (which is introduced in week 20).

 

 

Key Strategies for the First Month Of School
Individual Assessment

 

Since insuring that a student in Grade 5 has mastered previous grade level vocabulary is of absolute critical importance – what would be the best way to go about determining a student’s earlier grade level vocabulary mastery? 

 

Without question - the only effective way to determine student mastery of previous grade level vocabulary is by testing students on an individual (one-on-one) basis.  This does not require too much time (averaging about 30-45 minutes per student) and is well worth the effort considering the tremendous amount of valuable information gleaned from the assessment.  The following page outlines these steps in detail.


Procedures for Beginning School Year Individual Testing

 

1.    Print out enough copies of the Grade 4 vocabulary list as you have students in your 5th Grade class.  Also have at least 4-5 copies of the Grade 3 list for lower level students). 

2.    Set up a table in a quiet area and have an aide or helper sit down next to the student and begin asking the student to read the word as you point to them.  Ask words in random order beginning with the easier lower levels and work your way up to the higher levels.  If the student is answering most words correctly and only making about one error per 20-30 words, then he/she is pretty much on grade level.  However, so you can identify some words for the student, you can ask the harder words (at the bottom of each level) to increase the chance of finding words that are not known.

 

3.    When a word is said incorrectly - put a small line (or mark) to the left of the word.  When a word is said properly (but the student pauses more than 2 seconds) put the letter “p” next to the word along with the number of seconds delay.
(P3 means the child paused 3 seconds).

 

4.    Continue asking and marking words as long as the student is at least answering 6 or 7 out of 10 words correctly.   If the child reaches the point that he or she is only averaging between 5 and 6 words correct per 10 words in at least 5 column “Levels”, then you can stop and the child should be given extra practice (during or after school) using the Student Reading Wall strategies.  In other words, if the student is making errors 40-50% of the time, we need to begin this student on the “Student Reading Wall” in order to rapidly improve their reading ability.   Also, student’s who are missing 40% or more of the Grade 4 words should also be tested on the Grade 3 words.

5.    Continue testing all students in class making sure to write the student’s name at the top of each list for future reference.

6.    When student testing is complete, the goal is to then achieve mastery with the specific words identified for that student.  One excellent strategy is to write their first 20-30 “error” words on a 3x5 or 4x6 card and tape it to the top of the child’s desk.  At random intervals during the day, you (or teacher aide) can ask the student to say the words to you.  Once the student has some idea of what the words are – he/she can be asked to put the words into sentences.  Another excellent activity is to make a copy of the words on a larger sheet of paper and have the child take the words home for practice with a parent.  In the very near future, we are going to have a section at our ReadingKey.com web site where students can “click” on any word in the vocabulary list and view a short video teaching segment for that word.  At the first parent/teacher conference be sure to give the parent a copy of the child’s error list and stress the importance of their mastery.  Parents are highly impressed by this detailed attention to their child and usually put in extra effort at home to insure word mastery.

7.    For highly efficient vocabulary teaching, test 5th Grade students at mid-year using the same steps above on the words for weeks 1-18 and record all errors as in the above testing strategies.    This way you can make sure all students are progressing on schedule by identifying the precise words that particular student needs to practice.

National Reading Vocabulary

 

The following list contains 900 “new” reading words that students need to master by the end of Grade 4.  Students who master these vocabulary words (along with knowing all words in our Grades 1 – 2 – and 3 vocabulary lists) will be reading at approximately a 5.0 grade level and typically score in the top 10% on 4th Grade national reading tests (such as the Woodcock-Johnson or Stanford Achievement Test).  These 900 words are the “next” most-common reading words used in reading and textbooks after the 2036 words introduced our Grades 1 – 2 – and 3 Lists.  Words in this list (and all lists) were selected after detailed computer analysis for word frequency of occurrence in grade level textbooks including Houghton Mifflin, Scholastic, and Accelerated Reader.  To insure comprehension of test questions in a school’s end-of-year testing, we also include critical test question vocabulary (i.e. author, locate, paragraph, details, sequence, fact, opinion, pattern etc.).

 

Words in our Grade 4 List are organized as follows - TOTAL = 900 words

1st nine weeks - 144 new words (plus an additional 108 review words from Grade 3)

2nd nine weeks - 252 new words

3rd nine weeks - 252 new words
4th nine weeks - 252 new words

 

Vocabulary Organization

Although 1008 total words are used in the Grade 4 list, 900 are ”new” reading vocabulary words and 108 words are important review words from the Grade 3 list (Review words are designated by an “R” appearing to the left of the word).  Words are introduced at a steady rate of 7 words per day for a total of 28 words per week.  Friday is to be used by classroom teachers as a review and/or test day to determine mastery of the week’s vocabulary. The list words are organized from “most-common” to “least-common” along common vowel sound or reading rule categories.  Teaching words together that share the same vowel sound has been shown to dramatically improve the learning rate for students.

Word of the Day

Some of our daily lists show a “WD” next to the last word.  This is called the “Word of the Day” and has been placed here because it is typically more difficult to learn than the other phonics based words.  This difficulty occurs because it is either visually similar to other words (i.e. went – want) or its letters are not consistent with typical phonics rules (i.e. does/duz – what/wut).  The Word of the Day typically requires more practice to insure its complete memorization.

Readiness TEST

An excellent test to determine if a student is ready for the Grade 4 Program is to have him/her read the 108 “R” review words listed in Weeks 1 through 9.   If your student can read 50% correctly (54 of 108) then he/she is reading at approximately a 3.5 Grade level (3rd Grade 5th month) and should begin with our Grade 3 Student Reading Program.  If 75% are answered correctly (81 of 108), then he/she is reading at approximately a 3.8 Grade level and should be tested on the individual words in the Grade 3 program.  If your student can read the 108 review words with 5 or less errors they should be ready for the Grade 4 Vocabulary Building Program.  Along with reading the words correctly, it is very important for your student to read the words fluently.  Fluency is the process of being able to read words easily - smoothly and without hesitation.  National research has shown vocabulary and fluency are the two essential components for achieving maximum reading ability.

The Most Progress - The Least Effort

With over 20 years researching reading methods and student progress, the evidence clearly shows that teaching reading vocabulary words in small groups that share the same vowel sound will generate far more progress than any other method of teaching reading.

 


Drug Use Vocabulary Words

You will come across several “drug related” vocabulary words in weeks 20 through 24 in the Grade 4 list including – alcoholcigarettes - marijuana and cocaine.  Some teachers are startled when they encounter these words out of context, however, the ReadingKEY program is a compilation of words used in typical grade level textbooks including those from science and health.  Since national research shows many students typically begin experimenting with drug use in Grade 4, we strongly recommend you use this opportunity to discuss with your students or child the harmful consequences of these drugs and how to “say no” when they are exposed to them in a typical social situation.  The vocabulary word “attrition” is also repeated in this list and is an excellent word to help students understand how and why drug use can be harmful to one’s health.

A Powerful Tool for Teachers

If you are a classroom teacher and want to give your students a tremendous jump in reading ability at the start of school, we strongly encourage you to use our Grade Level Lists (like this one) to test all your students in a one-on-one situation during the first week of school.    Grade 4 teachers should enlist the help of assistants, other students or parents and test each student on the Grade 3 words.  Grade 3 teachers should test all students using the Grade 2 Vocabulary list.  Grade 2 teachers should test their students using the Grade 1 list, etc.   By doing this, you are identifying critical vocabulary that your student should have mastered before beginning their current Grade Level Vocabulary Program (remember, words from a previous grade list occur with greater frequency in books, and therefore, are more important to have mastered).  It is suggested that you print one copy (12 pages) of each vocabulary list for each student.  While this takes considerable time (and about a half ream of paper), it keeps things much more organized and allows for less confusing identification of words during the testing process.  (It is also quite impressive to the parents in your beginning of the year teacher conference to give them a list of words specifically for their child). 

Testing Procedure

To test a student, simply sit down at a table and ask him/her to read the words from the beginning of this list.  If your student is able to read the words easily and without hesitation, you may wish to save some time and ask them to read only the more difficult “WD” words (Words of the Day).  If a child can read these words correctly, then he/she most likely can read the other words correctly (since the WD words are typically more difficult).When your student reads a word incorrectly, it is highly beneficial to write the word the child actually said next to the list word.  For example, if the word on the list is “certain” - and your student said “curtain,” – you should write down “curtain” directly next to the list word “certain.”   This way they can be practiced together later.  You should also record if your student hesitates on a word.  For example, if your student hesitates 5 seconds on the word “sure,” you should write a 5 next to the word “sure.”  If they hesitate even 2 seconds – you should write a “2” next to the word.

Follow Up Practice

After completing the testing, write 20-30 list words that you previously marked onto a 4x6 card and tape to the top right of your student’s desk.  (Students love the fact that they have their very own special set of words).   From time to time, ask a student to read the words on their 4x6 card.  You can also make a classroom activity of having students put their words into sentences as well as timing them during the day on how fast they can say their words.  When mastery of the card words is reached, you can then tape another card onto their desk with the next 20-30 words.   Note:  When putting words onto the card it is recommended that you skip a space between each word.    Mastery is attained when the student can read the list words correctly without hesitation.  As added encouragement, you may wish to set up a reward for mastery of the words from the list.

 

For classroom teachers who take time to conduct pre-testing and subsequent practice, you’ll observe an immediate advancement in student reading level.

Grade 3

1.         National Reading Vocabulary

 

The following list contains the 800+ “new” reading words that students need to master by the end of Grade 3.  Students who master these vocabulary words (along with our Grade 1 and 2 vocabulary) will be reading at approximately a 4.0 grade level and typically score in the top 10% on national reading tests (such as the Woodcock-Johnson or Stanford Achievement Test).  These words are the “next” most-common reading words used in reading books after the 1200 words in our Grade 1 and Grade 2 lists.  Words used in our Grade Level Vocabulary lists were selected after computer analysis for word frequency of grade level textbooks including Houghton Mifflin, Scholastic, and Accelerated Reader.  To insure comprehension of test questions in a school’s end-of-year testing, we also include critical test question vocabulary (i.e. author – locate – paragraph – details – sequence – fact – opinion – pattern etc.).

 

Words are organized as follows:

1st nine weeks - 238 words

2nd nine weeks - 216 words

3rd nine weeks - 252 words
4th nine weeks - 252 words

TOTAL = 958 words

 

Vocabulary Organization

Although 958 total words are used in the Grade 3 list, 804 are ”new” reading vocabulary words.  154 words in the first nine week section are “review” words from Grade 2.  This is done to provide a much needed review of the major vowel sound and difficult reading words from the Grade 2 list.  (It has been a long summer). Words are introduced at a steady rate of 6 words per day for the first 18 weeks and 7 words per day for weeks 19-36.  Friday is to be used by classroom teachers as a review and/or test day to determine mastery of the week’s vocabulary. The 6 or 7 daily words are organized from “most-common” to “least-common” along common vowel sound or reading rule categories.

Word of the Day

The last word in each daily column is called the “Word of the Day” (next to the WD).  It is placed here because it is typically more difficult to learn than the other phonics based words.  This difficulty occurs because it is either visually similar to other words (i.e. went – want) or its letters are not consistent with typical phonics rules (i.e. does/duz – what/wut).  The Word of the Day typically requires more practice to insure its complete memorization.

Readiness TEST

An excellent test to determine if a student is ready for the Grade 3 Program is to have him/her read the 70 review words listed in Weeks 1 and 2.   If your student can read 50% correctly (35 of 70) then he/she is reading at approximately a 2.5 Grade level (2nd Grade 5th month) and should begin with our Grade 2 Program.  If 75% are answered correctly (52 of 70), then he/she is reading at approximately a 2.8 Grade level and should also go back and review the Grade 2 program.  If your student can read the 70 words with 4 or less errors they should be ready for the Grade 3 Vocabulary Building Program.  Along with reading the words correctly, it is very important for your student to read the words fluently.  Fluency is the process of reading words easily - smoothly and without hesitation.  National research has shown vocabulary and fluency are the two essential components for achieving maximum reading ability.

With over 20 years researching reading methods and student progress, the evidence clearly shows that teaching reading vocabulary words in small groups that share the same vowel sound will generate far more progress than any other method of teaching reading.

 


Attention Teachers !

A Powerful - Powerful Tool

If you are a classroom teacher and want to give your students a tremendous jump in reading ability at the start of school, we strongly encourage you to use our Grade Level Lists to test all your students in a one-on-one situation during the first week of school.    Grade 4 teachers should enlist the help of assistants or parents and test each student on the Grade 3 words.  Grade 3 teachers should test all students using the Grade 2 Vocabulary list.  Grade 2 teachers should test their students using the Grade 1 list, etc.   By doing this, you are identifying critical vocabulary that your student should have mastered before beginning their current Grade Level Vocabulary Program (remember, words from a previous grade list occur with greater frequency in books, and therefore, are more important to have mastered).  It is suggested that you print one copy (12 pages) of each vocabulary list for each student.  While this takes considerable time (and about a half ream of paper), it keeps things much more organized and allows for less confusing coding of words during the testing process.  (It is also quite impressive to the parents in your beginning of the year teacher conference). 

Testing Procedure

To test a student, simply sit down at a table and ask him/her to read the words from the beginning of the list.  If your student is able to read the words easily and without hesitation, you may wish to save some time and ask them to read only the “WD” words (Words of the Day).  If a child can read these words correctly, then he/she most likely can read the other words correctly (since the WD words are typically more difficult).

When your student reads a word incorrectly, it is highly beneficial to write the word the child actually said next to the list word.  For example, if the word on the list is “certain” - and your student said “curtain,” – you should write down “curtain” directly next to the list word “certain.”   This way they can be practiced together later.  You should also record if your student hesitates on a word.  For example, if your student hesitates 5 seconds on the word “sure,” you should write a 5 next to the word “sure.”  If they hesitate even 2 seconds – you should write a “2” next to the word.

Follow Up Practice

After completing the testing, write 20-30 list words that you previously marked onto a 4x6 card and tape to the top right of your student’s desk.  (Students love the fact that they have their very own special set of words).  Also, it is very helpful to include the words that you wrote next to incorrectly read words.  From time to time, ask a student to read the words on their 4x6 card.  You can also make a classroom activity of having students put their words into sentences as well as timing each other on how fast they can say their words.  When mastery of the card words is reached, you can then tape another card onto their desk with the next 20-30 words.   Note:  When putting words onto the card it is recommended that you skip a space between each word.    Mastery is attained when the student can read the list words correctly without hesitation.  As added encouragement, you may wish to set up a reward for mastery of the words from the list.

 

For classroom teachers who take the time to conduct this pre-testing and practice, you’ll be rewarded with an immediate advancement in student reading level.

1.         National Reading Vocabulary

The following Grade 2 Vocabulary List contains the 856 new reading words that students need to master by the end of 2nd Grade.  Students who achieve this goal consistently score in the the top 10% on standardized national reading tests (i.e. Woodcock-Johnson and Stanford Achievement) and will be reading at approximately a 3.0 grade level.

 

A total of 958 words are used in the Grade 2 List
They are arranged as follows:

 

1st nine weeks – 238 words
2nd nine weeks - 216 words
3rd nine weeks - 252 words
4th nine weeks - 252 words
TOTAL = 958 words

 

Of the 958 words used in the Grade 2 list, 102 words in the first nine weeks are review words from the Grade 1 List.  This is done because the first several weeks of Grade 2 should be spent reviewing the more difficult Grade 1 words and primary vowel sounds (students have a very short memory over the summer).

 

An excellent “Test” to determine if a student is ready to begin the Grade 2 List is to ask the student to read the 70 Grade 1 review words listed in Weeks 1 and 2.  Students who answer 50% correctly (35 words) will be reading at approximately a 1.5 grade level (1st Grade 5th month).  Students who answer three-quarters of the words correctly will be reading at approximately a 1.8 level (1st Grade 8th month).  Students who answer all 70 words correctly will be reading above a 2.0 grade level. 

 

Other review words are presented as word #5 for Weeks 2-9.  Grade 1 review words are identified by the letter “R” located to its left.


Intelligent Word Organization

 

Words are arranged from the "most common" words at the beginning of the list to the "lesser common" words toward the end of the year. This provides you the most logical and efficient order for instruction. To further increase memorization efficiency we have organized words into similar vowel sound and reading-rule categories. This strategy alone has been shown to dramatically increase the rate in which a student learns new words by giving a common sound or rule to use while decoding the words.

 

Students advancing at the recommended pace of one "Level" per week will typically score in the top 10% on 2nd grade national standardized tests such as the Stanford Achievement or Woodcock-Johnson.  Upon mastering the 850+ words, a student will be reading at approximately a 3.0 Grade Level.

 

Difficult Vocabulary Words

 

The last word in each daily list is what we call our “Word of the Day.”  It is located in the “grayscale” background to separate it from the main list words.  The “Word of the Day” is far more difficult to learn than the other phonics based words.  This difficulty occurs because it is either visually similar to other words (i.e. went – want) or is not consistent with typical phonics rules (i.e. does – what).  The “Word of the Day” should be given extra practice to insure its complete memorization as it is also a high priority reading word.  We have excellent additional activities in our program or achieving this.

 

Because of the fact that Grade 1 words occur with greater mathematical frequency when reading Grade 2 reading books or tests, it is very helpful to insure that your student(s) have mastered all words in the Grade 1 Vocabulary List before beginning the Grade 2 Vocabulary.

The 340 reading vocabulary words in this 1st Grade reading list have been carefully selected as words which Grade 1 students need to master by the end of the school year.

Students who achieve this goal will be reading at approximately a 2.0 grade level and typically score in the top 10% on standardized national reading tests such as the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) or Woodcock-Johnson.  For comparison, our research has shown that students who know approximately 240-260 words on this list typically score at the 50th percentile on 1st Grade standardized tests.

 

The 340 words introduced in the 1st Grade List are arranged as follows:

1st nine weeks - 70 words - 2nd nine weeks - 90 words
3rd nine weeks - 90 words - 4th nine weeks - 90 words
TOTAL = 340 words

 

STEP 1 – Insure the Foundation

The first two weeks of the program begin with a review of all consonant sounds.  Consonant sound mastery is essential if reading progress is to achieve maximum efficiency.   Failure to have all consonant sounds memorized will dramatically slow reading progress.  The most difficult consonant sounds for students are – h – w – l – x (at the end of a word) and  y (at the beginning of a word) – as well as the very important consonant digraphs – ch – th – sh – wh.

 

Intelligent Organization of Vocabulary Words

The 340 words in our Grade 1 List have been prioritized to provide the largest benefit for students learning to read.  Words are organized from "most common" in the beginning weeks to the "lesser common" words toward the end of the year. This provides the most logical and efficient order for instruction throughout the year.  Vocabulary words were selected after extensive computer analysis of common Grade 1 reading books (including Scholastic – Houghton Mifflin and Accelerated Reader). To further increase memorization efficiency, we have organized words into small groups of similar vowel sound and reading-rule categories. Our research has clearly shown that teaching words that share similar vowel sounds dramatically increases the rate in which students can permanently master (learn) the new words.

 

Important “Difficult” Vocabulary Words

The last word in each daily list is what we call our “Word of the Day.”  It is in the “grayscale” background to separate it from the other phonics based reading words.  The “Word of the Day” is typically more difficult to learn than the other words in the column.  This difficulty occurs because it is either visually similar to other words (i.e. went/want – who/how) or is not consistent with typical phonics rules (i.e. does-duz – what-wut).  The “Word of the Day” should be given additional practice to insure its memorization (we have several excellent activities for this).


20 Years of Research

After working with hundreds of students over the past 20 years, we have improved and modified our Grade 1 Vocabulary List to make it as relevant and efficient as possible for improving the learning-to-read process.  After observing student test performance upon mastery of the list words, we have confirmed that students who can successfully read the 340 list words will be reading at approximately a 2.0 Grade Level and typically score in the top 10% on any 1st Grade standardized test  (ie. Woodcock-Johnson or Stanford Achievement).    This same excellent performance carries through with our other vocabulary lists for Grades 2 through 5.   

 

Greatly Improved Rate of Progress

To help students master the vocabulary words in our grade level lists, TampaReads has developed a unique reading improvement program called ReadingKEY. 1)     Limiting words to 5 per list in our Grade 1 Program (within limits of short term memory)

2)    Grouping words along common vowel sound categories (short a – long a – etc)

3)    Color-coding vowel sounds (short vowels red – long vowels blue – other vowels green).  This strategy constantly reminds student of the vowel sound and vowel sound location in the word).
